RenoPublicSafety is dedicated to
exactly what the name says.

Reno has a long history of dedicated law enforcement officers and unfortunately too many paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Today, the state of public safety in Reno-Washoe County is not good.

This site is under re-construction, post-election. As we progress, here is a brief look at issues in Reno.

The RenoPublicSafety Board of Advisors does endorse and support candidates in elections.

#1: We need good folks to run for office in 2022.

In this newsletter we address crime stats as well as serious fire issues at the Reno Fire Department.

First, the City of Reno is a fiscal and leadership disaster. In 2019, Reno had a riot where the terrible mayor failed to back the cops. Reno has gone through city managers and has run up over $ 1,114,904,000 in debt and liabilities for a City of about 250,000.

Part of that rests with a run-away fire contract the prohibits the use of volunteers and seasonals. A contract that mandates four person crews, the only agency in Nevada that does so, most use three person crews.

Reno RFD salaries are outrageous: Here is the top:Fire Battalion Chief, Reno, 2019 pay and benefits: $437,573.62.  Another received $23,366.45 in overtime and $107,367.91 in ‘other pay’ on top of his regular pay and benefits. Another firefighter received $51,803.17 just in overtime!

But wait there is more, Reno allows employees and firefighters to use illegal drugs such as heroin, LSD, Meth and combinations thereof. See attachment.

Moving on to Reno’s rising crime rates; it is not good. Stats differ but one report lists Reno at just 18 out of a high score of 100 (safest).

www.neighborhoodscout.com

Another rating states that “Reno comes in as the most dangerous city in Nevada with a 3946 crime rate per 100,000 people. Las Vegas, home to the world’s largest gaming resorts and superstars, ranks as the 2nd.”

This study lists Reno #2 worst in Nevada:

https://backgroundchecks.org/safest-cities-in-nevada.html

1. North Las Vegas -1.26

2. Reno -0.87

Here is one more:

https://www.bestplaces.net/crime/city/nevada/reno

Reno violent crime is 34.8. (The US average is 22.7)

Reno property crime is 44.7. (The US average is 35.4)

All of the above paint a dismal picture of Reno’s safety. Likewise Reno’s homeless population is out of control with City-wide unhealthy camping. All that said, generally day to day, no one feels safe. Thus far we are an open carry firearm state and Conceal Weapon permits are easy to obtain.

Where do we go from here? We need strong fiscally responsible candidates to run for office including City Council. The RFD run-away costs and terrible drug use policy cannot stand. There are ways to address having more law enforcement officers and courts that apply the law and jails that don’t “catch & release.” We are not yet California but getting there.

Thanks for reading and stay tuned to this site as we update it.

The RTC 5 Gas Tax Debacle

Been to Fernley or Carson lately? Bought gas? Noticed anything?

12-5-16: I paid $1.99 for regular gas in Fernley!!! On arrival in Reno the cheapest I saw it $2.53, a 54c difference for gas that comes from the Sparks tank farm.

October, 2021: $3.49 in Fernley; $4.09 in Reno

Why? Doesn’t the Fernley and Carson gas come from the Sparks tank farm?

In 2008 voters approved a never ending tax increase, RTC5 that goes up every July forever unless your elected officials act.

RTC5 raised has taxes only in Washoe County. You even gas cheaper in parts of California - and no end in sight!

Every July one they  "....Adjust the diesel and gas tax rates in Washoe County based upon the rate of street and highway construction inflation to recover lost purchasing power on our local, state and federal diesel and gas tax revenues”.

BALLOT MEASURE FISCAL EFFECT:

“Based upon historic inflation rates of street and highway construction, this measure would increase the tax paid on a gallon of gasoline approximately 2 cents per gallon...  The inflation recovery taxes would remain in effect until such time as specific action is taken by the Washoe County Commission to amend or repeal them.”

Even our local government pays the tax so you pay for the extra costs for our police cars, school buses, fire trucks and all government gas costs!

Further, the taxpayers and consumers are cunning and bear considerable watching (paraphrase of military quote). We now have cell phone with apps that tell travelers to bypass Reno. That loss of gas tax hurts various county agencies.

Who’s looking out for you. Almost no one. RenoTaxRevolt.com is an informal website. We need a PAC, we need the new Washoe GOP to get involved. What can be done?  Plenty!

1. A PAC or group to advocate and fight this and other related taxes (See WC1, S-1, S-2, ETC)

2. Every elected body can pass a resolution and advocate to cap the WC1 increase and even lower it…but…

3. It seems that the Washoe County Commission has the authority to click their heels and cap or lower the tax.

4. If the County won’t act, throw them out! Then ask the legislature to cap or kill it! It’s election season.

5. Let’s develop a new Tax Pledge, including RTC5 along with S-1, S-2, WC1 (those are another story) and get them to sign it or get out!

Sincerely,

Jeff Church
